At Dog.Dog.Cat., we use a higher curation standard when choosing foods for our shelves. We do not select foods containing ingredients labeled by-product or by-products. That includes terms like meat by-products, beef by-products, poultry by-products, animal by-products, and similar by-product wording.
We do carry some foods that use a species-specific meal ingredient, such as beef meal or chicken meal. In our curated selection, a clearly named species-specific meal is the lowest-quality ingredient category we accept. Even then, we do not judge a food by one word alone. We evaluate the complete formula, sourcing, processing, nutrient profile, calories, and nutritional adequacy statement too.
This is a statement of our store’s product-selection standard, not a claim that every legally compliant by-product ingredient is unsafe. Our priority is clearer species identification, whole-food transparency, and practical label clarity for pet parents.
First Things First: What a Label Can and Cannot Tell You
Before we get into ingredient terms, it helps to separate a few parts of the label that often get mixed together:
- Ingredient list: tells you the ingredients in descending order by weight as formulated, before cooking or drying changes moisture.

- Typical nutrient analysis: this is not always on the package, but manufacturers may provide it if you ask. It can help you look beyond the guaranteed minimums and maximums.
In other words, the ingredient list matters, but it is not the whole picture. Quality control, sourcing transparency, processing, nutrient balance, and whether the food fits your individual pet all matter too.
Plain-English Label Guide: What These Terms Mean
Here’s a simple breakdown of common ingredient terms using beef as the example.

1) Beef
“Beef” refers to named muscle meat or flesh from cattle. That sounds very straightforward, and in one sense it is. But fresh beef contains a large amount of water. Because ingredient lists are ordered by weight before the food is cooked or dried, fresh beef can weigh heavily at the mixing stage and appear first on the label.
That does not automatically mean the finished kibble or canned food is mostly beef protein after processing.
2) Beef meal
“Beef meal” is rendered and dried, which means much of the moisture has already been removed. Because it is concentrated, it can provide a substantial amount of protein on a dry-matter basis even if it appears lower than fresh beef in the ingredient list.
That does not automatically make it better or worse than fresh beef. The nutritional value depends on the source materials, how it was processed, and how the full recipe is balanced. 3) Meat
“Meat” is a legal generic term, but it is less specific. It may refer to mammalian meat from species such as cattle, pigs, sheep, or goats. That lack of specificity matters if you are trying to understand sourcing, compare formulas, or avoid a certain animal protein.
4) Meat by-products
This term tends to scare people, but it helps to slow down here. AAFCO-defined by-products can include clean, nutritious organs and other edible animal tissues besides the main muscle meat. Organs can be very nutrient-dense.
At the same time, Dog.Dog.Cat. chooses not to carry foods labeled with by-product ingredients because our standard prioritizes more clearly specified, whole-food and species-identified ingredients. That is a statement of our curation standard, not a claim that every legally compliant by-product ingredient is unsafe. The practical limitation of broad by-product terms is that they give you less detail about exactly what tissues are included and where they come from.
5) Beef by-products
“Beef by-products” tells you more than generic “meat by-products” because at least the species is named. It still refers to non-muscle parts of cattle rather than primary muscle meat, and it still does not meet Dog.Dog.Cat.’s selection standard because we avoid by-product ingredients.
6) Meat meal
“Meat meal” is another rendered, concentrated ingredient. It is not fresh meat, but it is also less transparent than a species-specific meal such as beef meal or chicken meal. That distinction matters. Dog.Dog.Cat. may accept a clearly named species-specific meal as the lowest ingredient-quality category in our curated selection, but we do not use generic meat meal as our selection standard.
It is also worth distinguishing meat meal from meat and bone meal. Bone content can materially change minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which matters a great deal for some pets.
7) Animal by-product meal
This is a broad, rendered category and gives less source detail than a species-specific term like “beef meal” or “chicken meal.” It does not meet Dog.Dog.Cat.’s selection standard, and it is not used in the foods we choose for our curated assortment.
The Protein Smoke Screen: How Labels Can Look More Meat-Forward Than They Really Are
Here is where the “smoke and mirrors” feeling comes from.
Fresh meat weighs more because of water
Fresh meat is naturally high in water. Since ingredient lists are ordered by weight before cooking or drying, a fresh meat ingredient can appear first simply because it is carrying a lot of water weight at the start.
After processing, that ingredient may contribute less dry matter than many pet parents assume.
A named meat first does not tell the whole protein story
A food may list a named animal ingredient first and still get a substantial share of its total protein from plant sources. For example, ingredients such as:
- pea protein
- potato protein
- corn gluten meal
- wheat gluten
- soy protein
can all raise total crude protein.
That does not mean every plant ingredient is harmful. Many are used for practical formulation reasons, and some pets do well with them. The point is simpler: the crude protein number alone does not tell you how much of that protein is animal-derived versus plant-derived, or how digestible and appropriate the mix is for your pet.
Ingredient splitting can make comparison harder
Another thing to watch for is ingredient splitting. Similar ingredients may be listed separately in different forms, such as peas, pea flour, pea protein, and pea fiber. Individually, each one may appear lower on the list. Together, they may represent a much bigger share of the recipe than the label first suggests.
That does not mean a company is doing something illegal. It does mean label comparison can be harder than it looks.
The first ingredient is not enough
This is a big one. “First ingredient: beef” sounds impressive, but it is only one clue.
When you compare foods, look at:
- the first several ingredients, not just the first one
- whether the animal ingredients are clearly named
- whether a species-specific meal such as beef meal or chicken meal is used instead of vague meal terms
- whether concentrated plant proteins appear prominently
- whether by-product, animal by-product, poultry by-product, or similar vague by-product terms appear on the label
- the guaranteed analysis
- calorie content
- moisture
- the nutritional adequacy statement
- manufacturer quality control and sourcing transparency
- typical nutrient analysis, if the company will provide it
- protein-source details, especially for pets with sensitivities or medical needs

Moisture Matters: A Simple Dry-Matter Example
One of the easiest ways labels confuse people is through moisture.
A kibble and a canned food can look very different on the guaranteed analysis, but that does not mean you can compare the protein numbers directly. You have to account for water.
Dry-matter protein formula
Dry-matter protein = as-fed protein ÷ (100 − moisture) × 100
Example 1: Kibble
- 30% crude protein
- 10% moisture
Calculation:
30 ÷ (100 - 10) × 100 = 33.3%
Kibble protein on a dry-matter basis: 33.3%
Example 2: Canned food
- 10% crude protein
- 78% moisture
Calculation:
10 ÷ (100 - 78) × 100 = 45.5%
Canned food protein on a dry-matter basis: approximately 45.5%
That surprises a lot of people. The canned food looks lower in protein on the label as-fed, but higher on a dry-matter basis.
Still, that does not automatically make canned food “better.” Calories, amino acid profile, fat, phosphorus, fiber, completeness, digestibility, and your individual pet all still matter. The key takeaway is this: you cannot fairly compare protein percentages across formats without accounting for moisture.
Comparing Food Formats
Kibble
Kibble is usually low in moisture and commonly needs starch to help form and extrude the pieces. That does not make it bad by definition, but it does affect how you read the label.
A few practical points:
- fresh meat may move down in importance after water loss
- meat meals can provide concentrated animal protein
- plant ingredients may contribute more to total protein than the front of the bag suggests
- the whole formula matters more than a single flashy claim
If you feed kibble, compare the full recipe, not just “first ingredient beef” or “high protein” on the package.
Canned food
Canned food is high in moisture and heat-processed for safety and shelf stability. Many pets, especially cats, benefit from higher moisture intake, but you still have to read the label carefully.
Look at:
- protein sources
- starches or thickeners
- fat
- phosphorus
- calories
- nutritional adequacy statement
A named meat may appear prominently, but the same label-reading rules still apply.
Freeze-dried food
Freeze-dried food has water removed at low temperatures after the ingredients are prepared, so it is lightweight and concentrated. Depending on how you look at it, it can seem low in protein, high in protein, or somewhere in between.
Why? Because the numbers change depending on whether you compare it:
- as-fed
- on a dry-matter basis
- after rehydration
Rehydration changes the as-fed percentages, but it does not change the total amount of nutrients in the serving you are feeding.
Also important: freeze-dried foods are not automatically complete and balanced. Always check the nutritional adequacy statement and feeding directions. Dehydrated food
Dehydrated food also has water removed, usually through controlled drying, often with more heat than freeze-drying depending on the product. Like freeze-dried food, it is concentrated, so label percentages can be misleading if you do not account for moisture.

- rehydration may improve moisture intake

The same label-reading principles apply to both dogs and cats, but their nutritional requirements are not the same. A food needs to be appropriate for the species and life stage you are feeding.
Cats are obligate carnivores, which makes clear animal-protein information especially relevant. That said, it still does not mean every non-meat ingredient is automatically harmful. Context matters. Formula matters. The finished nutrient profile matters.
